Antoine Khoury, a retired professor from the University of Windsor offers online virtual classes that each has a small group of students. He assigns videos for the kids to practice during the week, then has a weekly class where he drills them/checks their progress and has the students interact with one another in French. We took his class in the fall and my kids progressed by leaps and bounds. It really comes down to the time you commit to it, with at least 5-10 minutes a day, they can make excellent progress. This semester, we are using his videos but the weekly class doesn’t work for us, so we are able to work on our own and then check in with him once a month.

My homeschooled son (gr 7) had not done French (aside from previously looking at a couple of vocabulary books) and I decided to try Prof Khoury’s program…. The videos were online and could be accessed at any time with some online instruction given directly from home. The ease of these videos made learning French fun and a lot easier as it just made sense! My son learnt conversational sentences and was able to expand as he watched more videos over the 10-week program. The videos were key…. We will be continuing with Prof Khoury’s program to increase my son’s knowledge of the French language.  There is an option to have parents and their child meet online once a month with Prof Khoury and other students of approx the same age/French level for guidance and to be evaluated as necessary to aid in learning correctly. This program was a success as we could watch the videos and then only practice 5-10 minutes a day and in no time have an ongoing conversation; now we have the option of purchasing the course with the videos and materials and being able to download them to learn at our own pace…. I am happy to do this now, knowing that Prof Khoury’s method of teaching is proven way to teach the language at home.

My 12 year old son just completed the HALF fall session; I was very happy with how much conversational French he learned in this short time…. The method of delivery worked well for him to be able to actually use his French as opposed to just learning words here and there and not being able to have a conversation. It does take dedication on both parts (parent and child) and a need for daily practice, even just a few minutes a couple of times a day but I found it very productive(it has also encouraged me to learn with him!).
